Woman as Animal
The woman’s place of power within each of us is neither white nor surface; it is dark, it is ancient, and it is deep. -Audre Lorde
Print media is made up of of time-intensive, physically laborious processes often reduced to “craft,” a loaded and gendered category. Its democratic nature and ability to be easily reproduced have made it instrumental to social justice movements. This show explored, through the framework of nature and the wilderness, women’s relationship to power and peace using printmaking as its primary language. The majority of the works are made using handmade paper.
The women in this world are ferocious, desperate, sensitive, confrontational, and animalistic. I hope their voices help realize a world where we no longer have to be silent.
